
Three Year Action Plan
The AZA Rodent TAG Steering Committee has identified the following areas for the Three-year Action Plan for 2004-2007
Continue soliciting for Studbook Keepers and PMP Managers for designated species. For 2004,
these included:
Prehensile-tailed porcupine, Coendou prehensilis
Brazilian agouti ,Dasyprocta leporina
Lesser Madagascar Hedgehog, Tenrec, Echinops telfairi
Springhaas, Pedetes capensis
Complete AZA Guidelines for Animal Care Standards for requested species. For 2004, these include: Squirrel species, Insectivore Species, American Beaver, Castor canadensis, Rock Hyrax, Procavia capensis, Porcupine species, Tree Shrew and Elephant Shrew species.
Develop a position statement on record management of these species to assist in proper taxonomic identification and colony management.
Promote and develop programs through the Education Committee that create awareness, understanding and appreciation of these species.
Develop program to correctly identify Dasyprocta (Agouti) species maintained in North American populations through, first, record management and then DNA techniques if necessary.
Develop program to correctly distinguish between the Crested Porcupine, Hystrix cristata and the African Crested Porcupine, Hystrix africaeaustralis maintained in North American populations through, first, record management and then DNA techniques if necessary.
Identify in-situ conservation priorities through collaborations with IUCN Specialist Groups.
Conduct a mixed-species survey to assist institutions in utilizing exhibit and holding spaces for these species more efficiently.
Develop a position statement on “Pet Trade” species and private collections.
Compile a database of husbandry related issues for these species and make available on website.
