Holding Capacity Overview
October 2002

Surveys requesting projected holding capacity numbers for Rodents, Insectivores and Lagomorphs were sent to 249 institutions on July 10, 2002.  This total included 205 AZA accredited institutions and 19 AZA related facilities.  To date 179 institutions have responded to the survey.  AZA accredited facilities account for 167 replies, reflecting a 81% response rate from AZA accredited institutions.  Of the 179 responding institutions, 143 currently house RILs, 133 AZA accredited institutions house RILs.

Currently there are 4,935 spaces held by RILs.
Current holding capacity for RILs is 6,062 spaces.

*Many institutions are reluctant to forecast capacity numbers past three years.  The current estimates do not reflect any assumed values for future capacity.

It is estimated that in 5 years 5,570 spaces will be dedicated to RILs.
